Jon and Kate: What went wrong?

I can't even believe that I'm succumbing to the Jon and Kate debate. But it seems to be a topic that everyone is interested in and talking about. So why decide to blog about it?

First, my ministry for several years has been and continues to be in the area of women's ministry. It concerns me that women flock and follow celebrities such as Oprah and Kate Gosselin, while taking their daughters to Miley Cyrus concerts. Kate may be a professing Christian, but there's some definite tendencies in her life that women should be fleeing from.

I think I can speak pretty candidly about Kate's tendency to "rule the roost" and dominate Jon's authority. I know we only see what the camera is allowing us to see, but wouldn't you think that we are probably seeing the better and not the worse? (I know, it makes for good television drama).

I am concerned about Jon and Kate. But I also have to look in my own mirror and wonder what the camera would reveal about my own marriage. Why is it so easy to be critical of my husband? Why do I want to win the power struggles? Why do I want to always be right and get my way?

Answer: Sin and Self. Honestly, I'm no better than Kate. I think it's a struggle many women have. Submission to our husbands and to their authority is an age old issue. We fight the "s" word and yet it's God's plan for our protection. We wonder why men aren't the leaders we want them to be and yet we continue to fight for the reigns of authority.

Today--will you pray for your marriage? Will you pray for the men in your life? And it sure wouldn't hurt to pray for Jon and Kate.

1 Timothy 2:11: "Let a woman quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness."

  1. If Christ is our Lord... submission will and should always be a part of our lives. And I'm reminded often that if I am struggling with submission in areas to the tangible authorities the Lord has placed over me in the this life I may need to evaluate also my recent responses in submission to Him. Often if my attitude has changed in one area, my heart is also not softened in my daily response toward my Savior. Thanks for the reminder, Kelly.

  2. I think part of Kate's problem, and our problem as women (and men) in this culture, is thinking "the next thing"...whatever that is...will make us happy. I don't follow the show, but I do watch some others, and you can see the evidence in those all around us (& ourselves included) trying desperately to find something to fill the "gaps" in our lives. Kate may have thought more children would make her happy...and they did. But they also came with complications. Such is life. Others think the new job, or the new house, or the new "relationship" will make them happy. And it may...for a while. I have seen more and more of my friends trying to make themselves happy in an admittedly difficult world with anything but the one thing that will actually work: an intimate walk with the Savior who loves them. I know God has constantly reminded me that only He can satisfy my soul. I agree Kelly, we need to covenant to pray for our marriages, and those around us who can't seem to stop seeking destructive things to make them happy. We need to reach out to them with the love of Christ.

  3. Great post, Kelly. There seems to be a whole lot of "male bashing" going on in our culture right now and I think it has made a lot of men afraid to be men. I've wondered before if we might start to see another shift in "women's lib" where the pendulum starts to swing a bit the other direction. In any case, I'm grateful for the reminder to pray for my husband, and all the men out there, pursuing their God-given role.
